Luhrmann's film is clearly meant to have exactly the impact on the audience as Gatsby's party has on Carraway. It should feel like an amusement park. It should be over the top. We should feel it is too much and entirely artificial, because that is exactly what those parties, and by extension Gatsby as a public figure, prove to be.
